Sims can spontaneously combust. It's rare, but it happens. The problem is, there is a bug where the flames don't appear while the Sim is on fire. In our first patch, we have corrected this so you can see the flames.

You can check for the latest patch by going to the Start menu, under Program Files, under Maxis, under The Sims, and choosing "Check for patches."
